Our Residents,at Mary Rose Manor, enjoyed and participated in, to various extents, our Western Themed Party which was held on Saturday 18th July.
We were fortunate and had great weather for the event, and residents made good use of the garden. This proved to be the most social area, with many residents from all floors interacting when they may not usually. They could participate in a number of games, for example a ‘cactus hoop toss’ which focused on targeted arm motion and the flexion and extension of their arms to achieve the goal. This activity became very social, with residents encouraging and supporting each other and celebrating successes. A simple game of ‘buckaroo’ proved a great source of amusement for residents who were content socialising in smaller groups round a table and focused on concentration and fine motor skills.
The Mocktail, Confectionary and Ice Cream stands were a great asset to the event and will be of great benefit within the home. The residents were engaging in conversations of a nostalgic nature, reminiscing about the sweet stand provided and what sweets they all liked and remembered from childhood. Details such as the traditional, well recognised pink striped paper bags reminded some of the residents of buying sweets with their children and added authenticity to the theme. The mocktails were also very popular, with residents becoming involved in the choosing of various soft drink concoctions and it was also a great tool in the encouragement of consumption of fluids.
The karaoke machine provided much entertainment for those who may have found it too warm outside and with staff support, it aided the self-confidence of those who participated and added much joviality to the party. It attracted a few residents who may normally shy away from group activities.
Our Western themed playlist was a great talking point, with residents reminiscing about their own experiences of hearing certain tunes, or by guessing the films that some of the tracks appeared in. It added a great atmosphere in the garden area and has prompted requests for a ‘Western Music’ themed quiz during our regular Friday evening Quiz Night.
As ever, the BBQ w as extremely popular, and with an added Western Twist, residents enjoyed chilli dogs and tacos alongside traditional burgers etc, followed by Ice Creams from our new stand or alternative dessert options. We noted how many of our residents enjoyed eating outside, and hope to offer a few more al fresco options moving forward.
The event was a total success which was enjoyed by all – we are already planning our next themed event.
